What is THIS?

Is THIS a new high priced miracle drug with unknown side effects? No, it is not high priced, and the side effects are far from scary…quite the opposite.

Here are some typical side effects of THIS: better digestion, staying more regular, helping keep blood sugar within the normal range, helping support the health of your heart.

So what is THIS?

Eating more dietary fiber.

Yes, people who include more fiber in their diet live longer and stay healthier.*

What’s the next step?

It’s early in the year. It’s the time of year when we think about changing old habits, creating new habits and taking care of ourselves a little better.

One new habit that may help you live healthier and longer is a small adjustment in what you eat every day. Here are some simple ideas. Dip carrot sticks or snap peas into hummus or guacamole instead of potato chips into sour cream dip. Snack on an apple, pear or banana instead of a cookie. Add a small salad containing some colorful vegetables to lunch or dinner each day.

A couple times a week have a protein and fiber-rich soup made with lentils, split peas or beans. This winter, enjoy the sweetness and fiber-filled nutrition of baked acorn squash or butternut squash.

The goal with these small changes is to reach or exceed the recommended fiber intake of 25 grams per day for adult women and 38 grams per day for adult men.

 

How many of us eat need to eat more fiber?

Prepare to be surprised. 91% of women and 97% of men do NOT get the recommended amount of fiber! So if you are reading this article, odds are you need more fiber in your diet, and making that change could help you live healthier and longer.

Isn’t that worth a little effort? Following the eating suggestions above can help you get closer to the target for optimum health. But if it were “easy,” most people would already be doing it.

Can a fiber supplement help?
